He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum) – also known as fo ti – is the great Yin tonic herb of the Orient, recognised by Taoists for its life-extending capacities (as it increases Jing). Jing energy lives in the kidneys, and when it is low we are susceptible to becoming exhausted and hormonal function can go out of whack. He shou wu has been used for millennia to pour energy back into the kidneys and bring the adrenals back into balance if they have “burnt out.” It does this by toning the kidneys, resulting in an enhanced ability for the system to adapt to stress, potentiate hormone secretions and increase production of sexual fluids.
He shou wu has also been used throughout Asia to regrow hair when there is premature balding. This is because of the connection in Traditional Chinese Medicine between the kidneys and the hair. The Chinese believe that if the kidney Jing essence is depleted and “leaking,” then the hair will turn grey and/or fall out in a premature manner. With the restoration of Jing kidney essence throughJiing herbs it is reported to bring back youthful hair when taken for a long enough period of time (and combined with less stressful life, of course).
Our Wild He Shou Wu Root is prepared traditionally and harvested from its natural home in China’s Changbai mountains. The freshly picked he shou wu tubers are sliced, stewed in black bean soup (in a proportion of 10 parts he shou wu to 1 part black beans) until the soup is exhausted. The “prepared” roots are then dried for water extraction.
