“I can’t function without my morning coffee.”
Sounds familiar, right? We’ve all had those mornings.
While coffee can do great things for your mind and body, it shouldn’t be the only trick that you use for better brain function. How about adding some green tea to the mix?
According to the Bulletproof blog:
“While coffee is king when it comes to boosting your brain function, green tea is like a noble prince, or the queen, whichever you prefer.”
Combining some components of Bulletproof coffee and green tea is where the magic happens.
This aptly named ‘Bulletproof tea’ blends the benefits of each to provide the best option for peak mental performance.
First, let’s have a look at what exactly green tea and bulletproof coffee are and what this craze is all about!

What is green tea?
Green tea was the first herbal tea ever brewed, with some saying that it dates back to 2737 BC. While there is some debate over who actually discovered green tea, we’re not concerned with giving credit, but boy oh boy we’re just happy they did.
Green tea has really stood the test of time, managing to maintain its popularity for about 4700 years. It’s been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to treat a variety of ailments.
There are three main varieties of tea: green, black and oolong. The strange thing is that they’re all pretty much the same, what makes them different is how they’re processed.
According to the Medical Center at the University of Maryland, green tea is made from unfermented leaves and contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants.
What is Bulletproof Coffee?
Well you can forget adding milk and sugar to your coffee that’s for sure. Grass-fed butter and medium-chain triglycerides oil (now that’s a mouthful) are all the rage these days.
I get it, it may not sound like the most appetizing cup of java. But what if I told you that you can improve your brain function and speed up weight loss, all while reducing your food cravings. Well now I’ve got your attention!
Now that you know what green tea and bulletproof coffee is, let’s have a look at some of the benefits of each.
The benefits of green tea
According to Ciara Conlon, there are a number of health benefits of green tea. The first, and one of the most commonly mentioned benefits, is weight loss. Why? Green tea helps to boost your metabolism.
Nutrition researcher, Kris Gunnars, explains how this process works:
“In order to burn fat, it must first be broken down in the fat cell and moved into the bloodstream. The active compounds in green tea can aid in this process by boosting the effects of some fat burning hormones”
As this fat is released into the bloodstream, it’s available to be converted into energy.
So here you have the possibility of weight loss combined with improved energy levels… do you even need anymore reasons?
Just in case you do, there’s many more.
According to the Bulletproof blog, the antioxidant compounds found in green tea may help to protect you from aging and inflammation. One specific antioxidant found in green tea is suggested to promote cardiovascular health by reducing the bad cholesterol. These antioxidants also improve the ratio of good to bad cholesterol.
Green tea has also been said to stabilise glucose levels, slowing down your blood sugar spike after eating. Stable glucose levels prevent insulin spikes and can reduce your body’s fat storage.
Green tea can also help with increased concentration and alertness, thanks to the caffeine. Not to mention that antioxidants can destroy bacteria that cause tooth decay and maintain healthy blood pressure levels.
I could go on, but I think you’re getting the point here.
Let’s move on to the famous Bulletproof coffee.
The benefits of Bulletproof Coffee
Bulletproof coffee promotes weight loss by triggering a metabolic state of ketosis.
David Asprey is credited with the high-fat concoction and he claims that the java is able to suppress hunger, promote weight loss and improve energy and performance.
In her blog, Laura Fuentes discusses how she felt after trying out Bulletproof Coffee. By the way, if you were ever looking to be converted to the Bulletproof cult, she might just convert you.
Laura discusses how she had an energy boost, without the caffeine crash hours later. She felt mentally alert and had reduced sugar cravings.
Bulletproof tea
So what happens when we mix elements of bulletproof coffee with green tea?
A morning tea cocktail that’s better than coffee, according to bio hacker Tim Ferriss. In a video on his blog, Tim shows how he combines green tea with coconut oil and grass-fed butter. He calls this concoction, rocket fuel for the brain.
In his diet and health related blog, Nat Eliason refers to this as “Bulletproof tea”. Eliason states that:
“I’ve been having it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning for the last two weeks… and I’ve never found a more pleasant stimulant.
As someone who was HEAVILY into energy drinks, coffee, and other stimulants in high school and the beginning of college, I’ve tried them all.
This is the best. Hands down.”
Our favourite green tea for the Bulletproof tea concoction is the Breakaway Matcha green tea.
Matcha is finely ground powdered green tea leaves, with a string of health benefits. Have a look at our product range here.
In his Biohacked vlog on unboxing the biohacked box, David Asprey (remember him, the Bulletproof coffee guy), calls Breakaway Matcha:
“A super-premium matcha tea” and refers to it as “some of the best green tea on the planet.”
Here’s a quick and easy recipe to make your own bulletproof tea, using your Breakaway Matcha blend of choice.
Bulletproof tea recipe
- 2g of Breakaway Matcha hyper-premium blend of choice
- 1 Tbs unsalted grassfed butter (available from leading supermarkets)
- 1 Tbs of Bulletproof Upgraded Brain Octane or XCT Oil
- 70 mls of hot water at 80c
First, sift the Breakaway Matcha powder into your cup, sifting gets rid of any lumps and bumps in your tea. Pour in the hot water and add the butter and oil.
Then, blend it with an electric frother or really quickly in a blender and there you go, the most delicious, creamiest matcha-twist around! It really is that simple!
One thing you’ll notice is that the butter and oil blends perfectly into the tea, making a thick and creamy blend. This combination also delivers a subtle creamy sweetness without the need for milk or sweeteners.
